Raising Godly Children: Lessons from Dr. John Street
Dr. John Street came to speak at Birchman Baptist Church today on families. Even though I am
single and do not have any children I still think the conference was really beneficial to me and I
learned a lot. The conference talked a lot about how to be a godly parent and how to raise godly children. We need to raise our children in the wisdom of the Lord and we need to teach them how to fear God and not people. One thing he said was that when a person fears the Lord more than anything else then they love Him more than anything else. They are more concerned with rather or not God approves of their life than anything else.
He also talked about how we need to love others as much as we love ourselves. People say we need to love ourself more but truth is we already love ourselves.
“for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church” Ephesians 5:29
We love ourselves and want the best for ourselves. We think about ourselves a lot.
“Do nothing [a]from [b]selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.5 Have this attitude [c]in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be [d]grasped, 7 but [e]emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, andbeing made in the likeness of men.” Philippians 2:3-7
“24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” Matthew 16:24-26
We should love God with all of our heart, mind and soul and then when we do that we should let the love we have for God impact our love for all others! When we do that then we will truly love!

It sounds like Dr. Street gave you some good advice that can be used by all of us. Children need to be raised by Godly parents. We all have a part in showing children how much God loves them and wants them to fear and obey Him as they grow up. Some greater wisdom on nurturing children.
